This morning I noticed that WNYC cut the second hour of Morning Edition (8am – 9am) and replaced it with a new show, The Takeaway, which usually only airs at that time on AM 820.
I’m hoping to confirm that this was a one-time offense, if I can get someone from WNYC’s listener services department to email me back. I checked my marketing guidebook, and I’m pretty sure it’s not cool to pull a switcheroo on your customers without any advance warning. (Exhibit A: Starbucks.)
My net-net on The Takeaway?
PROS
Local! (Morning Edition comes from DC, I think)
Two of the best names in radio: Adaora Udoji and John Hockenberry
Amazing website
Trying not to be a stodgy old bastion of liberalism
CONS
Local, but without so much as a sideways glance at NYC news
They’re no Inskeep and Montagne
80/20 rule in full effect on the website. Bells and whistles a-go-go.
Trying too hard not to be a stodgy old bastion of liberalism
I’m hoping WNYC didn’t pull a fast one and slip in The Takeaway unannounced this morning. I’m much more willing to roll with a technical snafu than the program director making an executive decision about exposing the wider WNYC audience to the show. WNYC makes a lot of noise about being “a part of our mornings.” That’s why they should recognize the fact that when listeners don’t hear Soterios‘ voice reciting headlines over the Morning Edition theme at precisely 8am, they get a little jumpy.
Net-net: I’ll give The Takeaway a chance, but on my own AM 820 terms.
This post is dedicated to Church of the Customer, a great blog you should check out if you haven’t already.
UPDATE: As I was about to hit “publish,” an amazing email came in from WNYC’s listener services department thanking me for my inquiry and letting me know there was a studio mishap this morning. With permission, I’ll publish it below in a few minutes. Way to go, WNYC!
