ASME Mars Rocks Competition: Student engineers design and build a vehicle to roam Mars and collect rocks

by Sandra Fathi on November 20, 2009

Our client, the American Society for Mechanical Engineers (ASME), www.asme.org, held a Student Design Competition at  the 2009 ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition on Sunday, November 15th in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. The Competition aims to challenge the creative and problem-solving skills and abilities of tomorrow’s engineers.

The theme for this year’s competition, Mars Rocks, required participating student teams to design and build a radio-controlled vehicle prototype that could be used to collect and retrieve rocks on Mars that would later be analyzed to determine if life had ever existed on the planet. Teams assembled from all over the world in order to take part in this challenge, some coming as far away as Egypt and Singapore to compete.  The winner of the Competition came from Texas Tech and was profiled by the local Fox station. Take a look at the video to see his winning design in action (hint, click forward to Red Raider Rover story and hit play):
